Mountain resorts then and now, a tour with Gregory Buchakjian

The Arab Center for Architecture is organizing a guided tour by Gregory Buchakjian titled “Mountain Resorts: Then and Now”, Saturday, September 7.

Dhour Choueir and Bois de Boulogne – also known as Bolonia – were two prominent mountain summer resorts in the Metn district, overlooking the Lamartine Valley and Nahr Beirut. In the early and mid 20th century, numerous families used to spend vacations there, and thus build residences. Others chose to stay in hotels such as the Grand Hôtel Kassouf and Grand Hôtel du Bois de Boulogne. The region heavily suffered from the 1975-1990 war.

This tour will focus on three sites, each having a specific history. It will start with Grand Hotel Kassouf, a luxurious establishment in Dhour Choueir that is still abandoned – like many other buildings in the region – though its gardens regularly host events.

The second and major stop will be Villa Jabre at Bois de Boulogne.

The tour will end at the Grand Hôtel du Bois de Boulogne, a historical site that remained untouched and never stopped its operations during the war. Lunch will take place in the garden of the hotel.
